IST 611 Digital Storytelling

For the next few weeks I will be blogging about Digital Storytelling. This topic holds great interest for me. I can see many wonderful stories that once were told orally now can move forward to the 21st century in the digital environment. I was surfing the net and came upon this definition Digital Storytelling is the modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling. Digital stories derive their power by weaving images, music, narrative and voice together, thereby giving deep dimension and vivid color to characters, situations, experiences, and insights. - Digital Storytelling Association retrived from http://electronicportfolios.com/digistory/faq.html#1 on June 2,2007
I can image the possiblities of our students using this format to tell their stories especially students that have special needs. Students can create digital stories in all their subject areas. A website that I found useful was the University of Houston College of Education http://www.coe.uh.edu/digital-storytelling/examples.htm. When you get a chance check this site out and let me know what you think. I look forward to hearing you thoughts on this topic.

I find this so interesting. I am looking forward to next year when i introduce podcasting to the students. This element of Digital Storytelling goes right along with it. I want the students to be able to listen to each other. It is so motivating when students see their peer's work. I enjoyed the web site you provided. They give a clear cut idea of how the concept can be developed for classroom use.

Hi Margaret,

Speaking of podcasting I just went on to Rebecca, my 6 year old daughter's school website. There was a new section about podcasting for the different schools. I too want to explore this topic. It seems to be digtial storytelling in only the auditory format.

I think the website will be extremly helpful to anyone that wants to start to use digital storytelling in the classroom. Iknow that I need to explore it futher to learn more about this topic before I try it out with my students.

Hi Gloria,

Thanks. I too am still learning how to use blogger. I went into the template area and played around till I found the harbor template. It reminds me of the water which I so love when I have the time.

I think we can find a way to get these types of projects working with limited technology. This is something to explore and I would like to help to be a part of the solution.

Hi Robin,
As you may not know I fall for storytelling everytime but digital storytell has totally blown me away.I visited the site you mentioned in your blog and was amazes at all the things we can do to motivate our students.
I visited first grader Victoria's portolio and I was trilled at all the things she was able to do, the illustrations ,the photographs of work done etc. I can image the many skills that were taught like ,how to scan , how to save , how to download pictures and even how to use sentences to make paragraphs and paragraphs to make stories.
I am learning alot from this course and I am really glad that we can help each other learn.
Thanks for the info! Good job.

Margie, your site is inspiring me to try to beautify my own blog. There are so many things I'd like to do in my class on the computer, but I can't even get the games (pbs kids). The filters won't let me get them.
